The Ship Inn represents Smith Dawson’s first move into the hospitality sector as part-owners, not just advisors, involving the complete delivery of a proposition from start to finish. Acquired in 2010, what was a struggling, average local pub has been transformed into a renowned boutique hotel and gastro pub, with listings in the Michelin Guide, The Good Hotel Guide, The Good Pub Guide and Sawdays. The peg-leg seafaring bulldog has become the inn’s icon, reflecting both its maritime history and the fact that the owners don’t take themselves too seriously.
Smith Dawson, as part owners of the project, have been involved from the beginning, shaping the proposition and experience for guests, as well as all aspects of the identity and its roll-out across multiple applications. Our involvement in The Ship Inn sadly ended in 2017, when the owners of the building decided to run it themselves, and so the lease was not renewed.
