Smith Dawson was founded in 2015 by merging two businesses - Mark Smith Design and Lou Dawson Consultancy - creating the full service offer we have today.

Our core expertise is in taking to market a genuinely fresh strategic perspective, backed up with category-breaking / sector-defining ideas. We don’t sell a process to a client and then fit the brief to that process. We start from scratch each time and build the process in a bespoke manner, based on the nature of the task and the specific problems we’re looking to solve.

The in-house team comprises strategists, researchers, writers, designers, developers, project & production managers who work together with an extensive network of specialist consultants and agency partners. This allows us to draw on specific skill-sets appropriate to the task, and implement our work in an integrated way in accordance with the creative strategy, the requirements of the business, and the resources available.

Background

Mark Smith & Lou Dawson began working together in 1997 at Interbrand. Mark initially as a designer, then a creative director, and Lou as a consultant.

In 2005 Mark left to set up his own design business, Marksmith Design, and has since worked with a series of clients such as Skype, Hoover, Virgin and Toshiba, as well as getting involved in some smaller startups and creative ventures.

Lou left Interbrand in 2002 to join Nike where she worked as Head of Brand Initiatives, then later as European Marketing Director and ultimately General Manager for Hurley International, a Nike subsidiary.

In 2005 Lou began her own business, specialising in branded entertainment and working with clients such as Electronic Arts, SonyBMG, Nike, Channel 4 and Sky to produce live events, digital content and broadcast programming.

In 2012 Mark invited Lou to collaborate on a project to redefine the retirement housing sector. One thing led to another, they remembered why they liked working together… and Smith Dawson was born.
